Hulu is keeping a tight lid on most plot details involving This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman‘s mysterious new political thriller Paradise.

According to the synopsis, Paradise is “set in a serene, wealthy community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a high stakes investigation unfolds.”

Sterling K. Brown is playing the head of security for a former president — played by James Marsden — who is the last person to see him alive. Not much is known outside of that since Fogelman has preferred to surprise viewers with his shows. The trend started with This Is Us, which aired from 2016 to 2022, and costarred Brown in a lead role. (This Is Us viewers didn’t know the show was set in various decades until the end of the pilot.)

Despite fans hoping for a This Is Us spinoff, Fogelman expressed interest in moving forward.

“My well is pretty dry right now and I think we wanted to end the show when we thought we were at our creative strong point before it got too tiring, too hard for us to come up with ways to keep it special and interesting. I feel this is the right endpoint,” Fogelman explained to Entertainment Tonight in May 2022. “Who knows what change of heart or midlife crisis brings but I feel like we’ve put these stories to bed now. Certainly for quite a bit of them.”

Paradise is set in a serene community that is inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals. The peace doesn’t last forever though when chaos explodes in the wake of a shocking murder and a high-stakes investigation. Brown’s character finds himself at the center of an investigation after he’s accused of murdering the former president.

“I can tell you it was written long before [the 2024 election], and that it is a work of fiction, and that any sort of resemblance to characters in real life is purely coincidental,” Brown told Variety in January 2025. “OK, I said it. I’m sure it’s gonna hit different people in different ways. We’re living in a very divided time in our country right now, and some people are incredibly enthusiastic about [the president], and some people are not. And I’m sure everybody’s going to put their own thing on what the show is. But I actually welcome what people have to say about it, because I am as curious as you are.”

Before reuniting on Paradise, Brown and Fogelman collaborated on This Is Us.

“He goes, ‘I wrote this show, and as I’m writing it, I realized I was kind of writing it for you.’ He said, ‘If you’re not interested, all good, I understand — but if you are, then we can talk about it,’” Brown told Variety in January 2025. “So I was like, ‘Bro, you’ve written six years of dope-a– shit — let me take a gander.’ I read it, and I called and said, ‘I’m in.’ He heard me say, ‘Amen,’ because I’m Black, and he figured I was just saying something from church, and then he’s like, ‘What does amen mean? Is it good? Is it bad?’ ‘No, dummy. I’m. In.’”

He added: “Where Randall was sadder, I think Xavier is angrier, and anger is the emotion that I think that people latch on to in order to not feel sad.”

The hit NBC series paved the way for several reunions such as Moore joined forces with This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger in 2022 for a Hulu show based on the hit “Twin Flames” podcast. Meanwhile over at CBS, Justin Hartley teamed up with This Is Us producer and director Ken Olin to adapt Jeffery Deaver‘s novel The Never Game, which became the network’s hit series Tracker.
